Quinta da Roêda

Quinta da Roêda - Croft & C:a

Owner Fladgate Partnership (Taylor-Fonseca Group)

Roeda means noise in Portuguese. Roêda has long been recognised as one of the great Port vineyards and in the Douro Valley there is a common saying, attributed to the 19th century poet Vega Cabral, which goes ‘if the wine district were a golden ring, Roêda would be the diamond’. This magnificent property was probably planted early in the 18th century during the great surge in demand for Port following the 1703 Methuen Treaty under which England agreed to levy a third less duty on Portuguese wine than on French.

It is from this famous vineyard in the centre of the Douro valley, that Croft relay on its port production. Its history dates back to 1811. Taylor, Fladgate and Yeatman purchased Roeda in 1844. For unknown reason the quinta was transferred to John Fladgate’s private ownership in1862. With the marriage of Fladgate’s daughter to Charles Wright of Croft the property passed into The House of Croft’s hands in 1875. Quinta da Roêda is the cornerstone of Croft’s reputation as a producer of superb Vintage.
