Quinta do Noval

Quinta do Noval Vinhos SA

Founded Founded: The predecessor of the port house Quinta do Noval was A. J. da Silva founded in 1813 but the first notes of the vineyard Quinta do Noval appears in 1715
Owner AXA Millésimes
Vineyards Quinta do Noval, Quinta do Silval, Quinta das Aradas, Quinta das Urqueiras. Includes smaller ones: Quinta da Obra Nova, Quinta do Marco, Quinta das Orgueiras, Quinta de Abrahao, Quinta das Canadas
Vintage Port Brands Quinta do Noval, Quinta do Noval Naçional, Silval, Quinta do Marco

The quinta is known since 1715 and was sold 1762 to Nicolau Francisco Guimaraes and remain in this family for exactly 100 years. In 1862 Jose Peixoto Guimaraes and his wife sold it to Jose Maria Rebello Valente. Ownership passed from Rebello Valente to Vilar d’Allen through marriage, but when phylloxera struck, it was sold 1894 to Antonio Jose da Silva Junior. His daughter Theresa married Luis de Vasconcellos Porto (what a wonderful name for a Port Grower!). He was made a partner of the firm in 1920 and A.J. da Silva died 1923. Vasconcellos retired in 1963 and his grandsons Fernando and Luis van Zeller took over. Next generation has also only a daughter Rita and she married Cristiano van Zeller, thus linking Noval to the family owing Quinta do Roriz.

Van Zeller family owned this house for ages but in 1973 they change the name from A.J. da Silva to the name of the famous vineyard, Quinta do Noval. Much of their history was burned 1981 when their lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia burned down and now they just have a small shop in Porto. AXA bought it from van Zeller family in May 1993 and then it has been managed by Christian Seely.

Quinta do Noval lies in the Douro valley in Northern Portugal one of the few remaining places of wild and unspoilt beauty in Europe.

Quinta de Noval Nacional
Quinta do Noval also has a small vineyard around the house - spared from the ravages of phylloxera in the last century - growing the precious ungrafted vines that produce the legendary Nacional Port which is ruthlessly sought out by, and highly revered by the true Port cognoscenti, commands stratospheric prices. (As the Rolls Royce salesman said to the buyer: 'If you need to ask the price you cannot afford it sir!'). The grapes comprise Tinta Francisca, Touriga Nacional and Souzao.

Quinta do Silval
A part of this quinta own’s of Noval and Cristiano van Zeller registrated and start bottling this as a special Brand
