Great Vintage Port Tasting

Vintage 1991

Since 2005 we have arranged about one Great Tasting per year in the Wine Society 18 % in Malmö, Sweden. What we mean by a Great Tasting, is that we have at least 20 Wines from one Vintage or one House. We have had several vertical House tastings and we have had horizontal Vintage tastings of most major declared vintages all the way back to 1947, and now the time had come to Vintage 1991, with the age of 35 years.

We have ranked the 1991 vintage as an Excellent vintage port. The Vintage was a so-called 'split decision' declaration, as some producers decided to declare 1991 and some instead declared 1992. This means for example that the houses belonging to Symington were all declared in 1991, whereas for example the Fladgate Partnership decided to instead declare in 1992. This means that instead of Taylor and Fonseca these houses produced single vintage ports or second label ports from 1991, e.g. Quinta de Vargellas, Quinta de Terra Feita and Fonseca Guimaraens. As can be seen from the results, these are all performing very well.

In this tasting, arranged in the Wine Society 18% on 21st of May in 2026, we had 24 Vintage Ports to be tasted in 2 flights. There were 12 participants in the tasting, and the Group points presented are the average points from all these participants.

We then had some extra bottles that did not make it into the official tasting, so on May the 24th the three of us (from www.vintageport.se), Sten, Jörgen and Stefan, tasted 9 more 1991 vintage ports. So, the group points for these Ports are only from the three of us. These wines were the following: Dalva (C. da Silva), Gilbert, Kopke, Pocas, Presidential (C. da Silva), Quinta do Estanho, Quinta Sao Luiz (Kopke), Quinta de Terra Feita (Taylor) and Quinta de Val do Figueira (Calem).

The top wines for the group were Fonseca Guimaraens before Dow's and Niepoort, with Croft, Graham's, Ferreira, Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita not far behind. In general we think 1991 is a solid Vintage, some volatile wines but in general a Vintage that is nice to drink at the moment, only a few have more to gain from further cellaring.
