Great Vintage Port Tasting

Vintage 1987

On November 17, 2022, we arranged a Great Tasting with Vintage Ports from 1987 in Malmö. We were 15 attending participants in the tasting, which we set up in two flights with twelve wines in each flight. We had done a qualified guess on which wines should be the best, and put them in the last flight. Within each flight we randomly mixed the order to make the tasting semi-blind.

We have ranked the 1987 Vintage as Very Good. We know of 54 different brands from 1987 which is quite many for a vintage that was not generally declared. Many people are under the opinion that 1987 should have been declared, and there are for sure some excellent wines from the Vintage.

The highest score from the group was given to Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas. Niepoort and Cockburn's Quinta do Tua was not so far behind and also Warre's Quinta da Cavadinha, Burmester and Taylor's Quinta de Terra Feita were actually also almost on the same level. Overall, the quality was high and we really enjoyed tasting these 35 years old port wines.

Mature yellow in colour.

Elegant crème caramel, cream candy, cacao, toffee spiciness in the nose.

Rather big body. Mature and at its peak. Toffee, crème caramel, cacao and much more, in flavour. Very tasty and complex port. Elegant with a long, very attractive. finish.

Fonseca-Guimaraens

Still dark but with a yellow mature edge in colour.

Wonderful nose of cream candy, coffee, tea, cacao, fudge, toffee, some crème caramel and liquorice.

Almost full-bodied. Still tannins and fruit. Violet, cacao, fudge, sweet liquorice and toffee in flavour. Excellent and a quite long finish. Extraordinary and lovely port, which is already now wonderful to enjoy.

Graham’s Malvedos

Still quite dark but yellow mature in colour.

Cacao, dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, some crème caramel and herbs with ginger bread in the nose.

Medium bodied. Mature and peaking. Ginger bread, cacao, dark chocolate and much more in flavour. Easy to drink and to like. Balanced and elegant with a quite long and attractive finish. Still a lovely port!

Yellow mature colour.

Complex nose of crème, toffee, fudge, crème caramel, cacao and coffee in the nose.

Medium body. Mature and almost peaking. Very easy to drink and enjoy. Balance with lots of tastes in the mouth. Quite elegant and complex port with a lovely and quite long finish. A delicate port to drink today.

Maia
Hutcheson-Feuerheerd

Yellow mature in colour.

Raisin, som cacao and some chocolate an also some coffee beans in the nose.

Medium body. Mature and peaking. Will not be better so drink up if you have any left. Still balanced and quite complex. Cacao, chocolate and some other things in taste with an attractive finish. This port is easy to drink and love!

Dark but yellow mature in colour.

Mint, candy, lots of herbs, cacao, dark chocolate, toffee and old grocery shop in the nose..

Medium body. Mature and almost peaking. Sweet but balanced. Lots of different wonderful things to taste in your mouth with a very complex and elegant and an astonishing long finish. What a lovely and surprising port!

Morgado
Forrester

Still quite dark but yellow mature quite beautiful in colour.

Cacao, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, crème caramel and some Christmas spiciness in the nose.

Medium body. Mature and on top. Balanced and elegant. Easy to drink and like Very tasty with cacao, chocolate, coffee, crème caramel and some spiciness and with an elegant and very attractive finish.

Mature yellow and quite beautiful in colour.

Toffee, cacao, dark chocolate, some coffee and crème caramel in the nose. Elegant and complex bouquet.

Quite full-bodied but mature and peaking. Mint, crème caramel, cacao and lots of other things in flavour. Complex, balanced and sweet with a lovely and very long finish. Lovely port. It is peaking so drink and enjoy it. Will still keep a long time!

Offley Boa Vista

Still very dark ruby but with mature yellow edge in colour.

Generous and attractive bouquet of herbs, spring flowers, liquorice and cacao but also mint and coriander in the nose.

Lovely body. Quite mature and probably peaking Lovely flavour of liquorice, herbs and much more. Quite sweet but balanced and complex with a long and attractive finish. Very elegant indeed.

Quinta do Bomfim
Dow

Still quite dark ruby in colour with a yellow rim.

Dark berries, liquorice, chocolate, cacao, toffe and cream candy in the nose.

Almost full-bodied. Almost peaking but still with soft tannins. Very fruity with liquorice, toffee, cacao and dark chocolate in taste. Balanced with a quite complex rather dry but very elegant and long finish. Lovely port!

Quinta da Cavadinha
Warre

Still quite dark ruby in colour with a yellow edge.

Toffee. caandy and cinnamon, also with coffee and cacao and som herbs in the nose.

Quite full-bodied and sweet. Lovely flavour of sweet dark berries and much more in the mouth. Still some soft tannin and will maybe be better. . Balanced and complex with an attractive very elegant and long finish. What a Port!

Quinta do Noval

Dark but rather yellow mature in colour.

Toffee, cream candy, Butterscotch, old grocery shop with coffee and cacao in the nose

Medium body. Quite mature and probably peaking. +Toffee, cream candy and ols grocery shop in taste, Balanced with a complex and attractive finish.

Quinta do Noval Nacional

Rather yellow mature in colour

Toffee, milk chocolate, cream cady, herbs and tropical fruits in the nose.

Medium body. Quite mature and almost peaking but with some round and attractive tannins and will improve. Balanced, quite tasty and elegant with a quite complex, very elegant and a quite long and lovely finish

Quinta da Roeda
Croft

Yellow mature very beautiful in colour.

Bitter chocolate, cream candy, fudge some cacao and a hint of old grocery shop in the nose.

Medium body. Mature and at its peak. Sweet. Balanced and very elegant. Dark and bitter chocolate, some cacao, cream candy in taste and with a very attractive and rich finish. Very easy to drink and enjoy today so just drink it!

Quinta da Romaneira

Beautiful mature yellow in colour.

Toffee, fudge, some herbs and burned sugar.

Medium body. Mature and at its peak. Complex and balanced and easy to drink and like. And with a quite attractive finish.

Quite dark but yellow mature in colour.

Toffee. cream candy, fudge, candy and crème caramel in the nose

Medium body. Mature and peaking. Balanced, very elegant and quite tasty with a lovely and attractive finish. Very easy to drink and enjoy.

Quinta de Terra Feita
Taylor

Yellow mature in colour.

Herbs, spiciness, cacao, coffee and old grocery shop in the nose

Medium body. Mature and peaking with herbs, spiciness and cacao in flavour. A balance port with a lovely and quite long finish.

Quinta do Tua
Cockburn

Yellow mature in colour

Raisin, cinnamon, ginger, mint, butterscotch and old grocery shop in the nose.

Quite full-bodied. Mature and peaking Cinnamon, candy, ginger and much more in taste. Balanced and attractive port with a quite long and complex finish.

Quinta de Vargellas
Taylor

Still dark but yellow mature in colour.

Lovely crème caramel, cream candy, violet, toffee, coffee and tea in the nose.

Full-bodied. Mature anad probably peaked but with some round and lovely tannins Balanced and tasty with a. complex and long, generous finish. What a port!

Still dark but yellow mature in colour.

Christmas cakes, crème caramel, cream candy, herbs, old grocery shop, minty and lots of cacao.

Mature and at its peak. Elegant and complex. Balanced and lots of different things in flavour. Wonderful and rather elegant finish. A very attractive and lovely port indeed.

Yellow mature in colour.

Lovely old grocery shop in the nose but also cream candy, herbs and toffee

Medium body. Mature and on top. Sweet and easy to like. Balanced and tasty with a very elegant, long abd attractive finish. A lovely port indeed!

Royal Oporto
Real Companhia Velha

Mature and very yellow but quite dark in colour.

Old grocery shop, cinnamon, vanilla, candy, cacao and fudge in the nose.

Medium body. Mature and peaking but still with some soft tannin. Sweet. Fudge, vanilla, candy and old grocery shop in taste. Easy to drink and like. Elegant and balanced. Quite complex with a very nice and attractive finish.

Tuke Holdsworth

Mature yellow and very beautiful in colour.

Lovely bouquet of cacao, dark chocolate, candy, some liquorice, crème caramel and much more in the nose.

Medium body. Mature and peaking. Balanced and very elegant with cacao, dark chocolate, liquorice and much more in flavour. The finish is seductive, quite sweet, long and quite lovely. Easy to drink and enjoy this port! Just try it!
