A wonderful day in Porto

Figueira2007After a great day with good spring weather we decided to visit a Port wine lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia. We went in to the Porto Cruz lodge and decided to have a tasting, and as my friends were new to the wide world of port I decided to have a tasting with broad range of port to show that port is a very wide concept. We got seven port, starting with the dry white, continuing with a few tawnies and ending with Cruz Vintage 2011 and Dalva Golden White 1963. We all agreed that we did not prefer the dry white but the decision between the old white and vintage was more difficult. It is astonishing that white port can transform from a quite mediocre wine (new on release) to a very complex and fantastic wine with age. We also learned that La Martiniquaise, the owner of Porto Cruz has bought the stock of Vasconcellos port from Christies. The brand of Vasconcellos remains with Christie’s.
Figueira2011After the touristic Gaia lodges we decided to have a glas of nice vintage port in the fabulous port wine bar Vinologia. I was very disappointed to find that is was closed! On the outside everything looked at usual but looking through the window we say a pile of letters inside and that everything was abandoned. However, we were lucky to get directions to the new location. It is just 30 meters down the street towards the river but there were no signs to the new place. We entered the new location, Portologia, and I wanted to find a vintage port we had never tried before. As I was looking at bottle of Quinta de Lamelas Vintage 2010 I said half aloud to myself “I wounder if we have tried this vintage” and as a reply I heard “yes, you had that the last time your visited us”. You cannot imagine my surprise when Maria at Portologia told me that she often uses our web site and knew that we had this particular vintage in September 2014. I was deeply impressed. Few, if any, wine bars has such an amount of vintage port to offer and after some discussion we found a vintage we had not sampled before, Quinta de Val da Figueira Vintage 2007. It was very good. I also had the opportunity to try the 2011 of the same quinta. However, the 2007 was better. Maria really provided a spectacular service and made us feel very welcome. We do recommend that you visit the new Portologia at your next visit in Porto.

Copenhagen Port Wine Festival

Thank you Henrik Oldenburg for continuing the Port Wine Festival. We have only missed one of all these wonderful Festivals since the start in 1988. This year Cristiano van Zeller gave us a wonderful history of Port wine and red wines in Douro. The family has been in wine business since 1620 and his daughter is now the 15th generation in the business. In the tasting room we could taste around 50 different vintage ports, the oldest a Martinez from 1987 but also four vintages from the 1990s. As usual Portal was most generous with 6 vintage ports but both Borges and Quinta de Roriz were also very generous and let us taste 4 different vintage ports of excellent quality.

Fourteen dealers presented the already famous 2011 vintage for tasting. The vintage is very exciting and sound. It seems to be a long runner even if some houses continue to do a more modern style of vintage port. Many compare this with the famous 1963 vintage. Read what point your favorite house got from us in the Last tasted section to the right.

Rui Maderia 2011 Vintage Ports

Fafide2011We have just tasted the first two Vintage Ports from producer Rui Roboredo Madeira Vinhos (www.ruimadeira.pt). Wine maker Rui Madeira has been involved in several wine companies in Douro and Beira for the last two decades. His company Rui Roboredo Madeira Vinhos has not produced any Vintage Port before the generally impressive 2011 vintage.CastelloDAlba2011

The company is using two different brands, Fafide and Castello d’Alba. Through a very positive contact with Rui Madeira we got the opportunity to taste both Vintages some weeks ago. Both are very impressive and are nice structured. Please read our full tasting notes on our pages for Fafide and Castello d’Alba.

We hope to see more Vintage Ports from this new family owned company in the future and we also hope we get the chance to follow the 2011 Vintages for many years from now.

The Port Wine Festival in Copenhagen

Thank you, Henrik Oldenburg, for continuing the Port Wine Festival in Copenhagen. We have only missed one of all these wonderful Festivals since the start in 1988.

This year Dalva presented their exciting Colheita of White Port. They are indeed very lovely and exciting.

Many dealers presented the already famous 2011 vintage for tasting and 30 out of 32 served this exciting vintage free of extra charge in our glass. The 2011 vintage is very exciting and sound. It seems to be a long runner even if some houses continue to do a more modern style of vintage port. If you have children or grandchildren you are to be congratulated indeed, since this is a vintage that we think they will be able to enjoy for a long time. Read what point your favorite house got from us in the tasting notes. You find them to the right, or here on the date 4th of November.

The annual Port wine festival in Copenhagen announced

Forlaget Smag has announced the annual Port Wine Festival at Børsen in Copenhagen on November 4 this autumn. As usual the event will give Port lovers a chance to taste a lot of port wine available on the Danish market. This is also an opportunity to meet with wine makers and representatives from many of the port houses.

This year we hope to taste a lot of 2011 Vintage Port. Many producers report that this is one of the best Vintages in recent years and it is the first general declaration after the 2007 vintage. All top houses have declared.

Tickets are available at http://forlaget-smag.dk/
This is a list of declared 2011 Vintage Ports that we currently know about. If you know of any more, please let us know.
